2026 NT Book Awards

Submissions to the 2026 NT Book Awards are now open!

Starting out as Territory Read in 2009 by the NT Writers’ Centre, the NT Book Awards have been celebrating excellence in NT writing for almost twenty years.

With generous support from the Northern Territory Government and the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund these awards have developed into the premier prize for authors in the NT, celebrating excellence amongst published authors across the NT. Previous winners include Marie Munkara, Andrew McMillan, Rod Moss, Barry Jonsberg and Mary Anne Butler amongst many others.

The 2026 NT Book Awards will honour books published by NT authors in 2024 and 2025 in the following categories:

  • Best Fiction: for a work of fiction published in any form or genre (prose or poetry).
  • Best Non-fiction: for a published work of prose other than fiction, including biography, auto-biography, creative non-fiction, history, philosophy and literary criticism.
  • Best Children’s or Young Adult: for a published book in either genre.

Each winner will receive a $10,000 Arts NT Fellowship to further develop their skills, talents and new works.

A shortlist will be announced in late August with the winner announced in September 2026.

Submissions open on 01 April and will close on 30 April at 5pm (ACST). See the submission guidelines for more information on how to enter.
