The 2026 NT Book Awards Shortlist is here!

Judges’ comments:

“This is an important book – for the story and the cultural, historical importance this brings to the cannon, but also for the cultural aspects in the development of the work – the collaboration of the writers and the relationships.”

On being shortlisted, author Leonie Norrington said:

‘I am thrilled. It is truly special to be acknowledged in this way by the people who know the world you’re trying to create – your own Countrymen and women.’ 

Judges’ comments:

“Authentic and grounded, but full of magic and mystery, this engaging, pacy, beautifully written novel integrates a teenage point-of-view to address community and belonging, friendships and first love.”

On being shortlisted, author Jasmin McGaughey said:

‘Being shortlisted for the NT Book Awards means more than I can put into words (even though I’m a writer). It is simultaneously heartwarming and encouraging. To know that anyone has read my work, let alone found merit to name it on this shortlist, is so moving. I am inspired to create more and so very grateful for this recognition.’

‘This is a delightful catalogue of Kaylene Whiskey’s art and art journey. Each page explodes with colour. Hearing Kaylene’s voice in the opening interview is a delight. This book gives an expansive and energising picture of Iwantja/Indulkana community.’

On being shortlisted, authors Kaylene Whiskey and Natalie King said:

‘I am thrilled that Kaylene Whiskey: Do you believe in love? has been shortlisted for the NT Book Awards. Kaylene’s message of coexistence and belonging is current and pertinent. ‘This is a thoughtful and considered collection of poetry coming at a time when the country and the world is learning to live with fire and threats of fire. The poetry is sparse and beautifully written; the poet demonstrating skill, finesse and confidence in the genre. An unforgettable collection.’

On being shortlisted, author Emma Trenorden  said:

‘I’m thrilled that this book of poems about the Black Summer Fires has been shortlisted. The support from our writing community helped me to keep going at times of doubt and I’m so grateful to have my first book of poems printed and in people’s hands to read.’

‘Presenting an underrepresented area of Darwin’s history, this dynamic play tells a long-ranging, geographically diverse story in a unique and engaging manner, full of resonance, pain, and ultimately forgiveness.’

On being shortlisted, author Gary Lee said:

‘It’s an honour to be recognised in this way and especially gratifying for this work, which intertwines family and Darwin history, to stand on its literary merits’

‘Accompanied by attractive and lively illustrations, this is a book that delights adults and children alike.’

On being shortlisted, author Kylie Gatjawarrawuy Mununggurr said:

‘I am excited and proud that my book has been shortlisted, I am happy to share my story and pictures with everyone.’

‘For its deep engagement with place, its gentle approach to overcoming disappointment and finding the good in the moment, and its beautifully realised illustrations, we highly commend this book.’

On being shortlisted, author Darren McCallum said:

‘Being shortlisted for the Northern Territory Children’s Book Awards is a very special honour for Craig, myself and The Wobbly Bike, a book written and illustrated as an authentic snapshot of growing up in our beautiful Top End.

The Wobbly Bike champions kindness, inclusion, self-belief, and perseverance and serves as a gentle reminder that practice makes progress. Having our story recognized here in the Territory, where it was conceived and created makes this nomination deeply meaningful and incredibly special. Thank you SO much!

‘In the tradition of counting books in the landscape, this is a book of place, belonging, local knowledge and language. Created by the children of the Yirrkala School means they will know and recognise each other’s work into the future. A clever and special book.’
