The NT Writers’ Centre is delighted to announce the winners of the 2026 NT Book Awards!

We are thrilled to share the winners of the 2026 NT Book Awards, which were announced at the inaugural NT Writing Awards on Wednesday 23 September.

Across the three categories of Best Fiction, Best Nonfiction and Best Children’s / YA, the 2026 NT Book Awards honoured books published by NT authors in 2024 and 2025.

The winners of the 2026 NT Book Awards are:

Best Fiction:

• A Piece of Red Cloth by Leonie Norrington, Djawundil Maymuru, Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs and Djawa Burarrwanga (Allen & Unwin)

Best Nonfiction:

• High Fire Danger by Emma Trenorden (Walleah Press)

Best Children’s / Young Adult:

• Raymaŋgirrbuy dhäwu When I was a little girl by Kylie Gatjawarrawuy Mununggurr (Magabala Books)

Here’s what the judges had to say:

“It was truly a commendable year for writing and we are honoured to have been able to read these works. From each title, our own worlds were expanded; we learned something new about each other and ourselves. From science fiction to romantasy, poetry to plays, the entries cover an astonishing breadth and depth of story, and an enticing insight into what and who the Northern Territory is. This could not be more evident than through the large number of books that are written in, or included Indigenous languages; a unique reflection of the Territory’s cultural and linguistically diverse landscape. 

We celebrate all the entries and encourage readers from around the country and the world to enjoy what is on offer.”

 

2026 NT Book Award Judging Panel, comprised of Maree Yoelu, Kate Cuthbert and Leni Shilton.

Winners receive a $10,000 Arts NT Fellowship to further develop their skills, talents and new works. Shortlisted books receive $1,000.

Previous NT Book Award winners include: Broken by Mary Anne Butler, Peace Crimes by Kieran Finnane, Every Secret Thing by Marie Munkara, Return to Dust by Dani Powell, Tangki Tjuta by Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Living in Tin by Linda Wells, and Hush by Ciella Williams.

It is with generous support from Arts NT, the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund and Creative Australia that the 2026 NT Book Awards have been made possible.

Best Fiction

“This is an important book – for the story and the cultural, historical importance this brings to the cannon, but also for the cultural aspects in the development of the work – the collaboration of the writers and the relationships.”

‘This is a thoughtful and considered collection of poetry coming at a time when the country and the world is learning to live with fire and threats of fire.
