The Unbelievable Truth with Madeline Oliver
In our time, life-writing is a vibrant, diverse genre. Memoir elements inform essays and other creative non-fiction and life-writing pushes the boundaries of fiction into autofiction. We hunger for true stories.
It’s exciting to read of experience that resonates with yours and intoxicating to tell your own story. In this workshop, participants are encouraged to delve into the specifics of their experience, to learn about themselves and above all, to enjoy the thrill of crafting experience into a story. You don’t have to be a writer, but expect to come away with a short memoir, autofiction or short story based on experience.
We begin by doing the writing work of identifying themes and dramatic questions before we dive into writing. In a safe, supported environment, students are encouraged to be brave and speak their truth.
This workshop addresses blocks as they arise, with students invited to reflect on their experience and share strategies that have worked for them, discovering their strengths and weaknesses. We create a plan to complete the work, and consider publication options.
The aim is to give you the confidence and inspiration to continue writing after you walk out the door!
