Anmatyerr Urrempel Men
The men of Alherramp are proud to demonstrate their unique songs and dances. The men have been working hard to practice the making of ceremonial performances and revive althart (public) dances that have not been performed for decades. Senior men have been instructing younger men in the painting of distinctive ceremonial designs, learning associated songs and dances, and showing how these traditions are linked to specific places. The Anmatyerr Shields, Songs and Ceremonies project, funded by the Indigenous Languages and Arts Program and co-led by Anmatyerr man Martin Hagan and anthropologist Jason Gibson (Deakin University), has enabled intergenerational learning, and resulted in increased engagement in these increasingly rare artistic and performative practices.
