In 2020 NT Writers Festival returns to Darwin, Larrakia lands also known as Garrmalang.
The theme of the festival is: Gunamidirra garawa birditj or when the tides turn.
Gunamidirra garawa birditj, Larrakia for when the tides turn explores our moments of change. In Gulumerrdjin, Larrakia country, the sea and rivers reach onto the land. Places flux with cycles of monsoon and dry. How are we made and remade? What can we change and what do we hold on to? How do we hold loss alongside possibility? In 2020, join writers and storytellers for a four-day celebration of books, language and stories asking us to consider the marks we leave behind, and how we face and create change.
Thanks to Bilawara Lee, the Larrakia elder who assisted with the language.
Featuring four days of books, words, performance and more, the program will celebrate the communities, landscape and environment of this spectacular region and its people. It will celebrate an inclusive Australian narrative and open conversations that cannot be had elsewhere.
The Festival will take place against a lush backdrop of monsoon and tropical flora in brand new facilities at the George Brown Botanic Gardens. It is an experience for readers and writers alike, and for those interested in ideas, culture, stories and language.
NT Writers Festival – Darwin takes place 14-17 May 2020. Our schools’ program runs May 18-22.
‘The perfect small festival…exactly the right atmosphere to explore big and complex ideas in the company of generous minds. All in a location reminding us that stories are the foundation of every civilisation.’ Morris Gleitzman
