NT Poets headed to Sydney
The winners of the NT heats of the Australian Poetry Slam, held in Alice Springs and Darwin over the last month, are headed to Sydney to perform in the national finals in Sydney on October 15.
This nationwide search for a slam champion of the year, is one of the largest and most respected performing writers programs in the world; combining stories, poems, theatre and hip-hop. To add to the stakes, this year the national winner will continue on to a jam-packed performance circuit including the Ubud Readers & Writers Festival in Bali, Byron Writers’ Festival and Sydney Writers’ Festival.
Darwin will be represented by Daniel Townsend, descendant of a convict girl and her employer, Daniel is a poet and folk musician who has performed at festivals across the country and draws inspiration from Darwin’s relentless weather, unhurried locals and ancient stories.
From Alice Springs is Mexican-born, Victoria Alondra. Raised in Vancouver, Canada after obtaining refugee status there, Alondra is an advocate for the rights of First Nations people in each of the places she has called home, including the Northern Territory where she has lived and worked since 2013.
NT Writers’ Centre is a proud supporter of this event.
