Meet the Publisher

Alice Springs/Darwin

September 4 - 7 2009

WHAT does it take to win the ear of a publisher? What gives one manuscript the edge over another? In the competitive world of publishing, with more and more writers clamouring to be heard, the process of getting into print can seem more daunting than the actual writing.

The NT Writers’ Centre is delighted to bring together representatives from some of Australia’s most respected publishing houses for a weekend where the simple strategy of face-to-face meetings and workshops will let you in on some enduring tricks and emerging trends of the trade.

“Getting other publishers to the NT is something our membership has expressed a keen interest in,” says the NT Writers Centre’s Executive Officer, Sandra Thibodeaux. “NT writers don’t often get the chance to meet publishers face-to-face or to learn directly from them about the processes and latest developments of the business.”

Forums and panel discussions on the ins and outs of publishing will be complemented by one-on-one consultations.

The genres include:

-    children’s/young adult fiction (Penguin),
-    adult fiction (Text),
-    non-fiction including memoir (Harper Collins),
-    poetry (PressPress in Alice Springs only),
-    Indigenous writing/subjects (IAD Press in Alice Springs only)
      and Niblock Publishing (Darwin only).

Those wanting one-on-one consultations will need to email a copy of their first chapter, synopsis and a covering letter outlining where they are up to in their work and why they want a consult. These need to reach us by 1 August, so we can select the most appropriate in time for the forum.
